Nearly all information our systems process on a daily basis have a physical location on our planet. Spatial IT avails itself of geographical position to manage data, improve working processes and analyse spatial connections. Specific programmes are used to represent data on maps and, based on their vicinity to other objects, analyse them. R3 GIS focuses on the development and maintenance of these programmes.

What does R3 GIS do?

Let's take a practical example: green spots in cities. Trees, green areas, playgrounds and street furniture are mapped and managed using a GIS (Geographical Information System). The position and surface of these objects is used to plan and manage maintenance operations. Trees and playgrounds are regularly checked, for example. All information is stored in a database and can be used to streamline these operations or to document regular maintenance in case of accidents (trees falling during a storm and causing damage). R3 GIS developed R3 TREES, which has been used in Merano, Bolzano, Bressanone, Milano, Sanremo and Rimini. The company has also developed software for ski carousels (skiGIS and snowmeter), public utility network (R3 TechNET), energy and CO2 monitoring (R3 EcoGIS), traffic signs (R3 Signs) as well as software for collecting and managing data for land registers and urban planning (R3 UrbanTools).

What's next?

R3 GIS is currently working on different Open Source projects concerning spatial databases, mapping services and geographical tools. GisClient is an Italian project spearheaded by a company in Genoa and R3 GIS. It provides a simple solution for setting up online mapping services. Furthermore, R3 GIS contributes to international projects such as PostGIS, OpenLayers, MapServer, GeoServer, gvSIG and Quantum GIS. Their contribution varies significantly and ranges from code improvement to drafting documentation, training material and tests. Companies such as R3 GIS, whose daily bread is working and collaborating with these technologies and topics, should be more involved in decision-making processes in the future. It's in the best interest of public institutions to create a skill hub in South Tyrol. Even if local companies and their skills and strategies are barely taken on board now, R3 GIS remains confident. In the future, it would like to create an open debate on these topics and see an enhancement of local skills in the public and private sector. Everyone will benefit from these.

Who is working behind the scenes?

Paolo Viskanic, together with other people, decided to found R3 GIS ten years ago- he has been CEO and Sales Manager since 2005. R3 GIS has 10 collaborators who develop software for the management of spatial data. These include but are not limited to pipes, house numbers, land registers, ski slopes and uphill lift facilities, the output or control of CO2 emissions, for example. This is also known as GIS in the software industry (Geographical Information Systems).
